Obesity is not just about look: Excess weight brings a higher risk of breast cancer

Women who are 25 to 65 years old put on weight for a dress size had a 33 percent higher risk of breast cancer, while those that changed two sizes had less than 77 percent higher risk, according to a survey.

Weight gain increases the risk of breast cancer because fat around the waist stimulates release of the hormone estrogen, which stimulates the growth of cancer cells, the scientists found the London College who analyzed the medical records of 93,000 women in their 50s and 60s.

Women who were 25 to 65 years put on weight for a dress size had a 33 percent higher risk of breast cancer, while those that changed two sizes had less than 77 percent higher risk.

Only 25 percent of respondents did not get fat during the two-year study, and the researchers found that in women who had lost weight a dress size lower incidence of cancer by one third.

“It is important to maintain a healthy weight, be active and reduce your intake of alcohol, especially after menopause,” said Tom Stansfield from the British Association of Cancer Research.
